When it comes to cooking, if you have mastered the art of grilling, only then have you done it all. If you can really grill a mean premium cut steak, you are the ‘King ‘ of cooking. The Weber Spirit Series grills are specially made for people who don’t like any fuss when they are grilling. Purely working on propane gas, the grills come in different sizes and have two to three burners.
I for one found that the Weber 46510001 Spirit E310 Liquid Propane Gas Grill, Black has great potential. It’s THE ideal grill for small families and offers much more than what we used to have: sticks placed on coals campfire style. Ok, I might have gone a little back to the caveman era but still our expertise in grilling revolved around that area. Believe me, there was a time when all I had was a marble slab drawer with a hand grill slapped on top. All I did was add burning coals in the slab drawer, douse it in liquid and boom . . . the meat was ready to be cooked. Big, big mistake! Yes, every weekend, it was amateur hour with me trying to cook a steak and my wife yelling, “Come sit down and eat. I have already cooked one in the oven”. Oven? How barbaric!
In 1985, Weber introduced its first gas grill. That was just the beginning and people knew that it was just the beginning in its innovative line of grills. I am not kidding but my dad bought this grill right after it came and he was grilling out in the garden to make his neighbour stewy jealous. Yeah, it was those days when you showed how manly you are by whipping out your grill in the garden and eating a family dinner.
Alright, a little history: In 2003, the company introduced its first portable gas grill, which was then redesigned in 2013 that started the “Spirit” series with the weber Spirit E-310 Liquid Propane Gas Grill. Weber slogan’s “For Life” fits quite well into its grills’ description. They haven’t just created a new and unique means for grilling but an equipment that will create some lasting and wonderful memories. We all look for a brand that not just fulfils our needs or wants but creates a strong relationship with us. Alright, let’s get down to business and let me tell you about this wonderful grill.
The Weber 46510001 Spirit E310 Liquid Propane Gas Grill, Black comes with all the necessary features we would like to have in a reasonably priced package. I wouldn’t say that this is a grill that can be operated by amateurs because it requires a firm hand and trust me, the first time you burn a steak on the grill, that’s the day you won’t ever live down in front of your family. The constant mocking and jokes on you . . . yeah, makes for good times.
To give you an overview, the grill’s control panel has been placed at the front for our convenience, and both the sides have stainless-steel tables that gives you room for placing spices and food prep. Cool isn’t it? I have never had a grill that had a counter where food could be placed. We would usually run to the table, place the food and then, run back to the grill. Ooh and if I was in a bad mood, usually shouting for your kids worked, well . . . not always.
There is enough room on the grill to cook twenty pounds of turkey or any other kind of meat along with vegetables. Other features that we will discuss further in this review include porcelain-enameled cooking grates made of cast iron, electronic crossover ignition system, three burners, igniter button that lights the grill with one touch and a fuel gauge that measures the propane gas accurately in the tank.
Weber Spirit e-310: Best Features
The Biggest Innovation – Porcelain-Enameled Flavorizer Bars
For those of who don’t know and still use lava rocks in their grills, you are in for a surprise. In 1980, Webster introduced one of its biggest innovations to the grill, which was porcelain-enameled flavorizer bars.
Basically, flavorizer bars are connected together and placed under the grate so that the drippings from the meat such as the marinade, butter or oil does not grease the insides. The drippings fall on to the bars instead of the burner tubes and prevent flare ups. The drippings on the bars vaporize and are circulated back to the food, adding more flavour to the meat. It’s the sizzle and the smoke that adds an extra layer of deliciousness to the meat. We could say that the bars take all the punishment and saves you from a greasy mess.
Admit it, the least favourite thing on our list is scrubbing the grill. Gentle cleaning won’t cut it and scrubbing will destroy the grate’s surface. We are faced with a situation that does not have a completely successful outcome. The flavorizer bars can be easily cleaned and must only be changed when you see holes in them.
Porcelain-Enameled Cast Iron Grates
For a hard and glossy protection, the grates have been enameled and the cast iron offers superior heat retention. You don’t need any kind of seasoning on the grate. For cleaning, a piece of cloth and brush is enough. Let’s start with the technicalities.
The Weber 46510001 Spirit E310 Liquid Propane Gas Grill, Black offers per hour input of 32,000 BTU and a cooking space of 529 sq. inches. The primary cooking area is 424 square inch and the warming rack is 105 sq. inch. It also has six tool hooks and an enclosed cart. The porcelain-enameled shroud prevents the grill from peeling, fading or rusting.
Double Grill – Rotisserie
Weber has meticulously thought through every detail, even down to the grill’s smallest screw. For them, it’s about providing us with not just a grill but a grill that will last longer. One of the greatest things that I got to know about this grill is that a rotisserie comes quite in handy if you want a slow roast. The rotisserie can be easily placed over the cooking grate, which allows you to cook tender and succulent ribs.
LP Tank Requirements
The Weber 46510001 Spirit E310 Liquid Propane Gas Grill, Black requires a twenty pound propane gas tank, which is not included in the purchase. Thank god for the fuel gauge, you can easily measure how much gas is burning at all times. I’m just grateful that I no longer have to turn the knobs repeatedly to adjust the temperature and then get completely blindsided in the future when the numbers get erased.
Delight at Lighting it the First Time
The first thing I did when I bought the grill was open its shroud. Damn, were its hinges smooth! Not a single noise. The burners just roared to life and my hands were itching to start grilling immediately. According to Weber, the grills have been made with great precision and these were clearly visible: The easy assembly, the roomy cooking and prep surface and easily controlled navigation system that made it possible to maintain the perfect heat level. What more could one ask from a grill? Nothing!
The Shroud and the Cook Box
The cook box contains four components, which include the flavorizer bars, burner tubes, cooking grates and the system that manages grease. It is enclosed in a cabinet that protects it from rust and dirt.
The cook box is made of cast aluminium and is efficient, durable and requires minimal maintenance. The grill can withstand high heat required to cook any kind of meat. Combined with the shroud, when the meat starts cooking, the heat circulates around and prevents the aroma from escaping. I have found out that if you keep the lid open, the meat loses a little of its tastes and the aroma.
Types of Cooking Grate Materials
Weber took the Weber 46510001 Spirit E310 Liquid Propane Gas Grill, Black to another level and has given us options in grates to choose from. Believe me, if my ten year old self had loved grills as much as I do now, I would have been jumping up and down in excitement in the store.
The three materials in which the grates are available include porcelain-enameled cast iron, stainless steel and porcelain-enameled steel. There’s not much difference between the three because all retain heat perfectly and beautifully sear the food. I think the only one different thing I found was in the appearance of the meat.
Ok, let me explain it more clearly. The porcelain-enameled steel grates cook the meat evenly from both sides, is easy to clean and durable. The porcelain-enameled cast iron grates capture the highest amount of heat amongst the two and does not require you to season the grill. Basically it captures all the taste and directs it back towards the meat. All you need to do is brush the grates with oil and you are good to go. This grate is also easy to clean and durable.
Now let’s come to the stainless steel rod grates. I like this one the best because it gives the meat such a lovely look. Did you know that food can be made more appealing by plating it up nicely and garnishing it? In the case of this grill, the stainless steel rods leave sear marks on the meat and create that picture perfect steak. Since I have always dreamt about grilling meat with perfect sear marks, I bought the stainless steel rod grate.
The One That Lights the Fire – Burner Tubes
Just like the entire package, the burners are also made of stainless steel. I believe the materials are of high-grade because you can feel them on touch. They are made specifically to hold water that is found in small amounts in natural gas and liquid propane. The burner tubes that connect to the burner are made with stainless steel and are one long tube without any welds. This is the most important thing that sold me on the grill. You see, burner tubes are really delicate and often break easily. With no welds, it makes them resistant to burn-through and stronger.
Now, you might be wondering how one would clean them. Since, they are protected by the flavorizer bars, there’s not much to clean. However, to be on the safe side, you can clean them with a brush. Not just any brush, a stainless-steel brush made specifically for cleaning the grill. In case you thinking what type of brush to buy , don’t worry , it is already included in the grill.
Each burner has a separate control, which allows you to grill directly or indirectly. The burners are evenly spaced so that the heat spreads across the entire area. Since, each burner has infinite settings; you can tune them on different levels to get the middle meat tender and the edges crispy. That’s the way I cook because the crispy edges really taste good.
Weber claims that it is the company that brought the flavorizer bars in the lime light. In fact, all of Weber’s grills have the flavorizer bars. They did truly add a genius component to the Weber 46510001 Spirit E310 Liquid Propane Gas Grill, Black , which has made my life easy. The first time I grilled, I was surprised with the clean surface. Admit it, most of the time we are sceptical about the benefits of the features we read on the product’s website.
So, some of you might be thinking ,then what if not all the drippings get vaporized, then what? Well, what I saw when I was cleaning the weber gas grill was that the drippings followed the path of the slope and were funnelled to the underneath grease management system through the burner tubes. As mentioned earlier, this prevents flare ups and the burner tubes do not get clogged. Since the drippings are mostly spices and no solids, everything can be wiped easily from the grease management system. All the flavorizer bars need is a good brushing and they can be maintained easily.
Grease Management System
The Weber 46510001 Spirit E310 Liquid Propane Gas Grill, Black grease management system has a catch pan with an angled grease tray. The grease tray is located underneath the cook box and is far away from the burners to prevent any dripping from catching fire. This grease then travels to the catch pan where it rests at a safe distance away from any sizzles or flare ups. Both trays can be easily cleaned. There’s also a drip pan that is disposable and must be replaced immediately with a new one when it’s filled.
The fuel gauge not only shows how much fuel remains in the tank but also the temperature of the burners. So, you don’t need to worry about running out of gas in the middle of a cook out. In my opinion, this is one of the best grills I have ever had. I have heard a lot of complaints about why doesn’t the Weber 46510001 Spirit E310 Liquid Propane Gas Grill, Black come with natural gas. Frankly, I found this much more satisfying. The only difference is the price and availability. However, one major difference that I experienced was that I did not need to extend gas lines to connect to the gas pipeline. The tank was easier to manoeuvre, plus a gas line coming into your backyard can be hazardous. Believe me, I have heard tales about people tripping and detaching the line.
So that’s it …. that was my experience with the Weber 46510001 Spirit E310 Liquid Propane Gas Grill, Black. If you are thinking about buying this grill, I would highly recommend it. It has five years of warranty and easy maintenance. You can easily extend this grill’s life for years to come !
